THE MOST UNIQUE AND EFFECTIVE EARPLUG-EARBUD HYBRID

In the late 2000s, Plugfones recognized a great need in many workplaces—people were required to wear hearing protection but wanted to listen to music at the same time. Plugfones have combined comfortable, noise-reducing earplugs with high-quality audio speakers. The resulting hybrid provides the ultimate hearing protection + listening experience on the market.

Key certifications:

NRR 27

An NRR of 27 means that the hearing protection is estimated to reduce noise levels by an average of 27 decibels across various frequencies.

'NRR' in hearing protection stands for 'Noise Reduction Rating,' which is a single value used to indicate the average level of noise reduction a hearing protection device provides across different frequencies, essentially telling you how much sound attenuation the earplugs or earmuffs will offer when worn correctly; the higher the NRR value, the greater the noise reduction level is considered to be.

NRR is primarily used as a rating system in North America, while Europe often uses 'SNR' (Single Number Rating) and Australia/New Zealand use 'SLC80'; which both differ slightly in calculation.

NRR 29

An NRR of 29 means that the hearing protection is estimated to reduce noise levels by an average of 29 decibels across various frequencies.

SLC80 23dB

This hearing protection product complies with the Australia/New Zealand standard and has been tested in accordance with AS/NZS 1270.

It has an SLC80 rating of 23 (which in rough terms means it blocks about 23dB of noise) and is a Class 5 hearing protector.

  • Class 1: SLC80 10–13 - Suitable for <90 dB noise levels
  • Class 2: SLC80 14–17 - Suitable for <90-95 dB noise levels
  • Class 3: SLC80 18-21 - Suitable for <95-100 dB noise levels
  • Class 4: SLC80 22-25 - Suitable for <100-105 dB noise levels
  • Class 5: SLC80 ≥26 - Suitable for <105-110 dB noise levels

SLC80 Explained

Under AS/NZS 1270:2002, hearing protection is tested for its Sound Level Conversion (SLC80) rating, which indicates the difference between the environmental noise and the sound reaching the wearer’s ears. This rating helps determine the appropriate Class of hearing protection for specific noise levels.

Australian and New Zealand workplaces are obligated under AS/NZS 1269.3:2005 to:

  • Conduct noise level surveys to assess exposure (measured as LAeq,8h).
  • Provide suitable hearing protection for workers exposed to noise above 85 dB(A).
  • Ensure hearing protection is maintained and properly fitted to achieve effective attenuation.

Employers must select hearing protection suitable for the measured noise levels, ensuring compliance with occupational noise management regulations.

SLC80 22dB

This hearing protection product complies with the Australia/New Zealand standard and has been tested in accordance with AS/NZS 1270.

It has an SLC80 rating of 22 (which in rough terms means it blocks about 22dB of noise) and is a Class 5 hearing protector.

  • Class 1: SLC80 10–13 - Suitable for <90 dB noise levels
  • Class 2: SLC80 14–17 - Suitable for <90-95 dB noise levels
  • Class 3: SLC80 18-21 - Suitable for <95-100 dB noise levels
  • Class 4: SLC80 22-25 - Suitable for <100-105 dB noise levels
  • Class 5: SLC80 ≥26 - Suitable for <105-110 dB noise levels

Product Care

How do I Change my Earplug Tips?

How to Remove a Plug:

  • With one hand firmly grip the plug housing. With the other hand grip the sides of the plug. Carefully pull the plug housing in one direction, while pulling the plug in the opposite direction until the plug is successfully separated from the plug housing.

How to Install a New Plug:

  • With one hand firmly grip the plug housing. Use your other hand to grip the sides of the new plug. Carefully insert the housing stem into the base of the plug. Push the plug housing and the new plug together until the plug sits firmly in place against the plug housing.

Over time you may notice a build up of earwax, dirt or grime on your silicone or foam plugs. The longer this grime remains on the plugs the more likely they will harden, stiffen or deteriorate. This could lead to the plugs tearing or needing to be replaced. It is always a good idea to keep your plugs clean and in good condition.

How to Clean My Plugs:
1. Remove your plugs from your Plugfones device.
2. Use a damp cloth to gently wipe the exterior of the plug to clean the surface. For silicone plugs be sure to also gently wipe the top and underside of each layer to
remove additional grime.
3. Check the opening at the tip of the plug and make sure it’s not obstructed by earwax or other debris. Remove any obstructions.
4. Make sure the plug is completely dry before you using it with your Plugfones.

NOTE: While cleaning take care not to tear the foam or silicone layers of the plug.

WARNING: Do not submerge the plugs in water while attached to a Plugfones device.

When Should I Replace my Plugs?
If you notice any tears or rips in your plugs, if they have become hard or stiff, or you notice
discomfort while inserting them in your ear it is time to replace them.

Foam Plugs:
A good foam plug is soft, squishes to the touch and easily conforms to the shape of the ear canal. When foam plugs harden or stiffen they no longer shape to your ear canal and no longer outer protection. They may also cause discomfort or pain upon insertion into the ear.

Silicone Plugs:
A good silicone plug has smooth pliable layers that help it slide easily into the ear canal. When a silicone plug stiffens and is no longer pliable it will not slide easily into the ear and may cause discomfort or pain upon insertion.

Instructions

Fitting

  • Fit Check: Earplugs should feel secure and block noise without discomfort.

  • Listening: Connect to your device via the 3.5mm audio jack and adjust volume on your device.
  • Call Management (if applicable): Press the multifunction button to answer/end calls.
  • Removing Earplugs: Gently twist and pull out to avoid discomfort.

Not just for on the bike!

I bought these earplugs to provide hearing protection while also connecting earphones to my radar detector when riding my motorcycle. They work great and are very comfortable under the helmet. The only issue is the cord is quite light weight and whips around violently in the slipstream. I am working on a solution for that though.

The sound quality through the earplugs is very good (wasted on the radar detector duties) so I also use them to listen to music through the phone when I'm mowing the lawns, and the hearing protection is as good as wearing earmuffs.

Great product, worth every cent. 👌

    Great match for a Cardo

I found using ear plugs with my motorcycle can be hit and miss and need to have my comms at full volume to hear anything at 100km/h.

These have transformed my riding experience and I am able to hear everything much clearer without compromising my hearing safety.
