Description

Howard Leight by Honeywell Impact Pro OSHA Compliant Electronic Shooting Ear Muffs are an ideal electronic ear muff for all the shooting sports, including indoor and outdoor practice, as well as hunting, plus letting you safely listen to music on your smart phone or other external devices while on the job in an OSHA regulated workplace.

Impact Pro goes two steps farther than ordinary electronic shooting ear muffs by first including an external stereo patch cable to connect to your Iphone, Ipod, scanner, or other music or sound source. By connecting to a hand-held FMRS radio, you can receive calls through the Impact Pro, and send by speaking into the radio, for amazingly inexpensive two-way radio communications in noisy environments up to 115 dB!

Step two is an internal volume limiter that prevents exceeding OSHA recommended maximum noise levels, no matter how loud the ambient sound or how high you turn up the volume on your external device when plugged into the Impact Pro. The volume at your ear will not exceed 82 dB making Impact Pro safe for all day wear on the job. Now the safety officer can finally say yes to listening to music, the cricket, the NASCAR Race or even books on tape while on the job. Repetitive work no longer has to be boring!

Key certifications:

SLC80 31dB

This hearing protection product complies with the Australia/New Zealand standard and has been tested in accordance with AS/NZS 1270.

It has an SLC80 rating of 31 (which in rough terms means it blocks about 31dB of noise) and is a Class 5 hearing protector.

  • Class 1: SLC80 10–13 - Suitable for <90 dB noise levels
  • Class 2: SLC80 14–17 - Suitable for <90-95 dB noise levels
  • Class 3: SLC80 18-21 - Suitable for <95-100 dB noise levels
  • Class 4: SLC80 22-25 - Suitable for <100-105 dB noise levels
  • Class 5: SLC80 ≥26 - Suitable for <105-110 dB noise levels

SLC80 Explained

Under AS/NZS 1270:2002, hearing protection is tested for its Sound Level Conversion (SLC80) rating, which indicates the difference between the environmental noise and the sound reaching the wearer’s ears. This rating helps determine the appropriate Class of hearing protection for specific noise levels.

Australian and New Zealand workplaces are obligated under AS/NZS 1269.3:2005 to:

  • Conduct noise level surveys to assess exposure (measured as LAeq,8h).
  • Provide suitable hearing protection for workers exposed to noise above 85 dB(A).
  • Ensure hearing protection is maintained and properly fitted to achieve effective attenuation.

Employers must select hearing protection suitable for the measured noise levels, ensuring compliance with occupational noise management regulations.

NRR 30

An NRR of 30 means that the hearing protection is estimated to reduce noise levels by an average of 30 decibels across various frequencies.

'NRR' in hearing protection stands for 'Noise Reduction Rating,' which is a single value used to indicate the average level of noise reduction a hearing protection device provides across different frequencies, essentially telling you how much sound attenuation the earplugs or earmuffs will offer when worn correctly; the higher the NRR value, the greater the noise reduction level is considered to be.

NRR is primarily used as a rating system in North America, while Europe often uses 'SNR' (Single Number Rating) and Australia/New Zealand use 'SLC80'; which both differ slightly in calculation.

SNR 33

An SNR of 33 means that the hearing protection is estimated to reduce noise levels by an average of 33 decibels across various frequencies.

'SNR' in hearing protection stands for 'Single Number Rating,' which is a single value used to indicate the average level of noise reduction a hearing protection device provides across different frequencies, essentially telling you how much sound attenuation the earplugs or earmuffs will offer when worn correctly; the higher the SNR value, the greater the noise reduction level is considered to be.

SNR is primarily used as a rating system in Europe, while North America often uses 'NRR' (Noise Reduction Rating) and Australia/New Zealand use 'SLC80'; which both differ slightly in calculation.

Product Care

Cleaning - Wash the earcups and ear cushions regularly with mild soap and water. Do not immerse them in water. Avoid using solvents such as alcohol or acetone, or waterless hand cleaners containing lanolin. Ensure the ear muffs are completely dry before storage or use.

Ear Cushion Maintenance - Regularly inspect the ear cushions and foam inserts for signs of wear, such as cracks or decreased flexibility. Replace these components every 6-8 months under normal wear, or every 3-4 months with heavy use or in humid/extreme climates, to maintain optimal noise attenuation and comfort.

Storage - Store the ear muffs in a clean, dry area away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Always store the product in the original packaging, away from sources of direct heat, sunlight, dust, and damaging chemicals. If storing for an extended period, remove the batteries to prevent potential leakage.

Instructions

Fitting - Pull out the earcups. Place earcups over both ears. Adjust the headband by sliding the ear cups up or down while holding the headband in place. Ensure hair, jewelry, or other obstructions do not interfere with the seal of the ear cushions, as this can affect noise attenuation.

Powering On/Off - To power on the earmuffs, turn the volume knob clockwise until it clicks. To power off, turn the volume knob counterclockwise until it clicks.

Volume Control - Adjust the volume of the noise amplification using the volume knob on the earmuffs.

AUX Input - Use the AUX input to connect external devices like MP3 players or smartphones. Connect the device using the included 3.5mm cable to stream audio directly through the earmuffs.

Battery Replacement - Open the battery compartment lid by pushing on the sides of the lid and sliding it upward. Remove the old batteries by using a blunt tool to gently pry them up and out of the compartment. Insert two new 1.5 V AAA alkaline batteries into the compartment, ensuring correct polarity. Close the battery lid completely. New alkaline batteries provide approximately 350 hours of operation.

Safety Note - Always wear the earmuffs in noisy environments to prevent hearing damage. Before each use, inspect the earmuffs for damage or wear, especially the ear cushions and headband. Do not use the earmuffs if they are damaged or if the ear cushions are compromised. Be aware that using the audio input may impair your ability to hear warning signals in your environment. Do not use at high volume levels for extended periods to prevent potential hearing damage. If you experience discomfort, pain, or any adverse reactions while using the earmuffs, discontinue use immediately and consult a healthcare professional.

    Earmuffs

Great design, work well with sudden loud noises dampened and can hear conversational level perfectly

The input jack is good but not compatible with latest iPhone which is a shame. Okay with radio I have and older tech .

    Good quality

Well put together and more comfortable than other muffs I've had

Works well at the gun range

I can't comment on reliability, but I got to use them for the first time at my club shoot with a .22LR pistol.

I also can't comment on comfort for more than 20 mins as my shoot didn't last that long. So my rating on comfort is for a short session.

I double plugged with these & a set of 3M skull screws also available at EarJobs, and it was quite a pleasant experience: the active earmuffs let low-level sounds through & I can hear the range officer & supervisors clearly (unlike the first time with double plugging with passive class5 earmuffs).

There was no ear-ringing after the session (I have sensitive hearing, so I double plug no matter what) & I had also a 9mm shoot in the stall next to me.

Would happily recommend these to others for pistol shoots (You probably want thinner earmuffs for rifle) & hopefully these end up being reliable.
